Best Gardening Tips

Do you enjoy spending time in your yard or garden, but get tired of all the grudgery and maintenance?  Here are some tips that can help:

  1. Use plants that will thrive in your area. This sounds simple enough, but every gardener is fascinated by the possibility of growing that unique plant that no one else has. Unless it is a new species or hybrid suited to your climate, stick to the tried and true varieites that do well in your area.
  2. Select low maintenance trees. Don’t be lured into buying what looks good at the garden center.  Do your homework with these Tree Selection guidelines.
  3. Always mulch your flower beds and border. It looks better than bare soil and your plants will withstand dry spells better.  See Mulch Basics for the benefits and types of materials you can use.
  4. Prune trees and shrubs while they are young to develop the proper good branching structure. See Pruning Basics for details.
  5. Eliminate weeds at the right time.
  6. Use a slow release fertilizer – such as Osmocote. It fertilizes slowly and evenly so it can be applied anytime.  Slow release fertilizers lessen the stress on plants in hot weather.
  7. Take advantage of your Microclimates instead of fighting them. Or, at the very least, be realistic about what will grow in them.
  8. Dormant oil spray in the spring. This is an environmentally friendly way to control aphids and other pests before they become a problem.
